Each year, the NFL draft introduces the next generation of talent into one of the most recognized professional sports leagues on the planet. In 2024, Detroit is the host for this remarkable event – shining a global spotlight on the city.
From Henry Ford to Berry Gordy, Detroit has a storied history of introducing the world to the next generation of innovations with worldwide impact.
Leveraging the energy of the NFL draft and the history of the city, GAIA and STEAM Revolt have created the “Celebrate Detroit” arts, music, and education program - inspiring the next generation of Detroit innovators, and fostering community engagement.
In the classroom, participating students will form teams to create a Super Bowl Halftime show concept and storyboard based on three potential themes: sustainability, connectedness and mental health, or the future of Detroit.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Rock Hall EDU offer an amazing array of free, classroom-ready content and activities for teachers, mentors, and instructors. Students will use content provided by GAIA and Rock Hall EDU related to Super Bowl halftime show history, “behind the scenes” production components, and other materials to learn about the creative process for large-scale production events.
Teams will then design the concept for their halftime show using one of the three themes. Their concept will be relayed as a hand-drawn storyboard including the key messages they are trying to relay for their chosen theme, the selected performing artist(s), ideas for stage design / look and feel, a set list of songs and how they relate to the message they are trying to convey, and any key visuals they would like to include (fireworks, inflatables, dancers, etc.). There are no constraints on imagination!
Teams will have the opportunity to present their halftime show concept on Friday, April 12th at Avalon Village. If you're not familiar with Avalon Village, start by watching this video.
Avalon Village's mission is to create a safe, nurturing, uplifting, and healing space within the City of Highland Park MI. We're doing this by converting vacant and blighted land into a valuable urban resource and providing basic living components for a quality, comfortable, and prosperous life. In addition, we provide basic services to the community to enhance traditional municipal or government services that have been reduced, eliminated or have become unaffordable. Avalon Village founder and CEO Shamayim Harris, known as Mama Shu, is an inspiration to all of us!
Teams will have 4 minutes each to present their concepts. We will have awards, food, music, and will celebrate all the creativity and teamwork participating students put into the program!
